Weconsidertheproblemofdesigningamultipledescriptionvectorquantizerforamem-orylesssourcewithprobabilitydensityfunctionp,di erentialentropyh(p)<∞andthesquared-errordistortionmeasure.Amultipledescriptionvectorquantizerencodesvectorsfortransmissionoveratwo-channelcommunicationsystem.Theobjectiveistosendinfor-mationaboutthesourcevectorovereachchannelinsuchawaythatgoodperformanceisobtainedwhenbothchannelsworkandthedegradationissmallwheneitherchannelfails.Itisassumedthattheencoderhasnoknowledgeaboutthestateofachannel,i.e.,itdoesnotknowwhetherachannelhasfailedorisworking.

Therecentinterestinthemultipledescriptionproblemislargelybecauseoftheapplica-tiontoimage,videoandvoicecommunicationsoverpacketnetworkswithnonzeroprobabilityofpacketloss.Thelossofapacketcouldbesigni cantifitresultsinalossofalargeblockofsourcesamples,suchasalargeimageblockoralargeblockofspeech.Onewaytoimproveperformanceistoplacedi erentencodedversionsofagivenblockofsourcesamplesintoseveralpacketsinsuchawaythatifsomeofthesepacketsarereceived,adegradedversionofthesourceblockmayberecovered.Thisleadstotheformulationofthemultipledescriptionsourcecodingproblem.
